Nintendo has provided us with some of the most amazing pieces of gaming technology since the inception of the company. However everyone was skeptical about Nintendo’s waning contribution to the gaming world, especially with the rise Sony’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft’s Xbox 360. However Nintendo makes a comeback with the Wii, a video game console completely different from its main competition, the Playstation 3 and Xbox 360.
The Nintendo Wii specializes in motion response. The controls in the Wii are based on the motions of the user. The console accomplishes to detect these motions with the help of the Wii Remote, the primary wireless joystick of the console. The video game console is named Wii for its short and easy to pronounce nature. The name also suggests the population of gamers that Nintendo aims to cover with the Wii, especially among groups like families; hence Wii is a world play for ‘We’ in a plural sense.
The demographic that Wii covers is more than that of the Playstation 3 and the Xbox 360. While developing the Wii, Nintendo took note of the desire to get as many people to play video games. While previously video games were considered often a child/teen’s thing and hence video game consoles were marketed to this specific population, the Wii expands this market into a much larger one where people who are parents, grandparents, teachers etc can play games too.
The Wii is a direct successor to Nintendo’s GameCube. Out of all Nintendo game consoles except for the Game Boy, the Wii is the smallest and the most portable home video game console system. It primarily comes in white.
There are other colors available also like black and pink. Wii cases can also be customized. The key components to the Nintendo Wii hardware are the console, the Wii Remote, the supplementary Wii Nunchuk, and the Sensor along with the rest of the required electronic items (batteries, adaptors etc). In order to bring out complete satisfaction from the Wii games, Nintendo has released several other attachments to the Wii Remote which specialize in a specific control in a game. For example the Wii Wheel is used for car racing, most notably in Mario Kart. Another example is the Wii Balance board which is used in the Wii Fit for an assortment of activities.
The Wii Remote is the main handheld component of the Nintendo Wii. Most of the major controls reside in the Wii Remote. It also contains the motion sensing feature which is the highlight of the Wii. The remote contains a sensor bar which senses the motions made by the user. The Wii Remote can also act as a normal joystick common in other video game consoles. The Wii Nunchuk is the supplement attached to the Wii Remote which can act as a secondary control for additional players.
The Wii is very well developed in terms of its hardware. The Wii Remote and Nunchuk offer a new kind of gaming control system that has never been released for any other game consoles. However, the sensitivity of the Wii Remote is an issue that many gamers face. Its sensitivity is restricted and in many games predetermined also. Hence, while the idea of real time motion controls sounds like innovative and entertaining, it is not completely perfect which is why this feature is only satisfactory.
